Graduation Day 101: Traditions, Travel, and What Comes Next

We’re excited to invite you to our upcoming live virtual event on Wednesday, September 24, from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM EDT, for a practical and heartfelt conversation designed to prepare families for one of the biggest milestones in the military journey: basic training graduation.

In preparation for this event, watch or listen below to this month’s podcast, “Graduation Day 101: Traditions, Travel, and What Comes Next,” which features a discussion with Rhiannon Brown, Curriculum Development Manager at the Defense Language Institute English Language Center (DLIELC) in San Antonio, Texas.

Rhiannon has over a decade of experience with the U.S. Air Force developing curricula, training resources, and diversity initiatives. She’s also a proud military parent whose son, Izaiah, shipped out to the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot in San Diego this August. With graduation set for November, she brings a unique perspective as both an experienced professional in military education and a parent walking this path for the very first time.

During this upcoming event on Wednesday September 24 @ 6:30pm EDT, we’ll explore:

  1. Emotional Perspective: How parents can navigate the mix of pride, waiting, and anticipation leading up to graduation.

  2. Preparation: Travel, logistics, and flexible planning tips for graduation day.

  3. Setting Expectations: Why no two graduations are alike—and how to embrace the unpredictability.

  4. What Comes Next: Supporting your graduate as they transition into AIT, tech school, or their first duty station.

  5. Encouragement for Families: Realistic advice and heartfelt wisdom from a parent who’s preparing right now.

This event will also feature a live Q&A session, giving you the chance to ask questions, gain practical advice, and connect with other families who are preparing for graduation too.
